You know how you have a dream vacation in your head – not only a place that you want to go but also who you would love to go with to that place? As a mom and wife, my husband and children are top priority. However, when a special trip to Israel came up with my mom and sister, I couldn’t resist! I am no stranger to Israel; in fact, I have been several times before. However, it is a place that holds so much beauty and history for not only the Jewish people, but to all people. No matter what your religion or lack of it in your life Israel has so, so much to see.
Before you go, I would like you to keep my 6 Essentials that you must bring with you to Israel. When you make your list, keep this close to you!
You will want to make sure that your cell phone carrier has service in Israel. You may have to ‘unlock ‘your phone, which can be done before you go. If your plan does not include out of country costs for usage, you can buy a sim card and make certain your communication doesn’t cease. There is WI FI everywhere, and the hotels do have free WI FI as well. I actually used Facebook messaging and WhatsApp the most while I was there. I invested in a sim cared just for extra measure, in case connectivity was weak in certain areas. You can actually purchase a sim card at Ben Gurion International Airport, you will see it as you are going out the doors to exit.
Airlines not only have a limit to how much each bag can way, but the dimensions of the bag as well. Make certain to look up this information on the airline page. There are also great techniques when packing, like putting things into Ziplocs and labeling them by clothing item. Other people use ebags , which are also a great option.
Comfy Walking Shoes
If you love heels, leave them at the hotel if you plan on touring around Israel. There are a lot of stone steps which make walking in heels a big problem. There are also a lot of steps, so keep that in mind too. I wore my Timberland Women’s Mayliss Slip-O Shoes were just perfect. Save your heels for when dining out, but make sure the stairs aren’t so bad before you leave for that destination.
You will want to stay powered-up and that means plugging in when back at the hotel. I found some Samsonite Converter/ Adapter Plug Kit with Pouch that I just loved. The hotels have plenty of outlets, so you will have enough for each member in your group to plugin.
Extra Battery Power
I am so glad I was traveling with Beth Rosen of boomfluent. She is a seasoned traveler and she had not one, but two of these mophie Powerstation 10,000 mAh. There were long stretches on the bus, and because of our Instagram stories, a lot of power was being used. Also, make sure to include extra Mini USB cables as well.
Food for the Flight
I have learned so much from my fellow Jewish mommies. When I asked them what to bring with when traveling to Israel, they gave me suggestions such as apples, bagel sandwiches, fruit, almonds, and raisins. Sure, your flight will have food (make sure to check this with your airline) but it may be really gross. Remember to order any special meals within 48 hours of your departure to ensure that you will have something you can eat. I actually forgot to do this and there were no extra kosher meals, none! On my flight going to Israel, somebody had looked at their kosher meal and decided it was not what they wanted. She offered it to me, but it looked not so good (sorry American Airlines).
I would love to hear from you. What do you feel is important to bring to Israel, especially for a first timer. If you have a specific question for me, don’t be afraid to ask.
